Out of the clouds I come...
So I’ve noticed something: Every few months I go from using services “in the cloud” to doing it locally (or on my Linode), and then a few months later, I swing back.
(Because I’m stupid and have a catchall turned on for markwalling.org,) I’ve been hit with a lot of backscatter lately, and even Google’s awesome mail filters have a hard time handling it. So my first anti-cloud-dote was to set markwalling.org’s MX records to my Linode, fight back with SEM-BACKSCATTER, and then forward mail to Google (because they have awesome web mail).
Next up was my Git repos. I really loved Github, but they had issues when I was in a bad mood… after some ranting, gitosis was recommended to me. It is now running, and I have some ideas on a better presentation then simply the default gitweb.
At some point in the whole mess, I decided to load my Delicious bookmarks into a model, and change the links page to use that, instead of just redirecting to Delicious. This still needs a better way to add links (right now I’m using the admin interface), but it was really quick and easy.
As far as things that I’m going to keep “in the cloud”, I’m enjoying Vimeo, and my last attempt at a feed reader backfired, so I’ll stick with Google Reader, but almost everything else is getting reinvented (picture sites especially, OpenID).
